A very determined spectator climbed a fence at this fall’s New York City Marathon in order to hug her colleague, NBC’s Willie Geist.
That spectator was Stephanie Ruhle, the NBC News Senior Business correspondent and anchor of MSNBC’s The 11th Hour.
Ruhle’s previously served as anchor of Stephanie Ruhle Reports, co-anchor of Velshi & Ruhle, managing editor and anchor at Bloomberg Television, and editor-at-large for Bloomberg News.
Prior to Bloomberg, Ruhle worked in the finance industry for 14 years.
Ruhle has been featured in several magazines, including Working Mother, Fit Pregnancy, and Business Insider.
Ruhle has interviewed politicians, business leaders, and sports stars — everyone from Martha Stewart to Dwayne Wade.
One morning, after the opening bell, I reached out to Stephanie Ruhle to ask how she makes time for exercise while juggling the demands of a busy career and family.
You’re a busy person. Is exercise and fitness a regular part of your life?
I definitely lead a really active life. I'd love to say I've got a disciplined fitness routine, but I don't. I take the stairs! My weekends are spent with my kids hiking, playing tennis and skiing. We live at the beach in the summer so we have a really sporty family.
I’m doing more family dance workouts with my daughter — it’s like doing some dance cardio. It's super fun, but I can't say it's hardcore fitness — at least not yet.
Have your exercise habits and routines changed since COVID began?
They have. It was sort of two months into COVID when suddenly I realized that the active lifestyle I was used to had disappeared. And that's when I started doing more old school exercise videos and apps to make up for working from home. I used to get thousands of steps in at the office without even realizing it.
I also love Pilates and want to make more time for it.
Is there someone that motivates you to keep active and fit?
My kids. The last thing I ever want my kids to see is me huffing and puffing. And while I can no longer beat my sons in a foot race, I'm determined to stay in the game.
Do you try to take active breaks when you're anchoring?
I do, but not because of any conscious wellness routine. I have a super busy job, family life, kids that I need to pick up (that I'm always late for), and laundry that always seems to be three flights of stairs up!
Which other activities do you enjoy for stress management?
I love cooking for my family but it's less about the cooking — I love eating with my family. I'm lucky to not live far from my parents and sister, so regular family dinners can often look like Thanksgiving.
It would be hard to avoid the conclusion that Stephanie Ruhle has boundless energy: always taking the stairs, family dance workouts, hiking, skiing, tennis, and of course, hopping fences. I'm happy I had the chance to catch up with her.
Thank you, @SRuhle
