The Reach Out: Paula Newton
The CNN international correspondent is "definitely a morning workout person."
Paula Newton is an international anchor and correspondent with CNN. Based in Ottawa, she has been with CNN since 2005 after previously working for CTV News in Canada.
Newton worked as CNN’s international security correspondent from 2005 to 2010, reporting from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
I spoke with Paula about why making time for regular exercise is important to her.
With your busy and often shifting schedule, do you have a specific exercise routine?
I try to exercise before 9am when it works with my schedule because I am definitely a morning workout person. For example, if I have a live shot at 6am, I will exercise after that.
Having said that, I will fit it in wherever I can. This morning, because of some family obligations, I'm walking the dog right now, as I talk to you, so I will try to do a quick workout when I get back. It may or may not work out! Having a dog helps a lot.
Do your workout habits change when you’re traveling?
When I'm traveling, it depends on my schedule. For instance, when I was anchoring overnights for quite a few weeks, an early morning workout was not going to work, so I shifted to lunchtime. It’s all dictated by my schedule.
Definitely, my preference is to exercise in the morning — I feel like I get a better workout. It's better for my mind.
Do you prefer indoor or outdoor workouts?
One hundred percent, I would choose to exercise outside. I've been running for a very long time — the better part of three decades.
But as my husband continued to tell me for years -- and I did not listen -- the older we get, the greater the need to become stronger, so in the last five years, I've begun weight training and a lot of core exercises.
When you exercise indoors, do you keep the television on?
I'm a multi-screen tech person, so whether I’m working out at home or in the hotel gym, I’ll definitely be watching the news. It may be CNN, CNBC, public television, or streaming news. It allows me to tune in and keep up.
How do you think we can effectively encourage kids and teens to be more active?
My husband and I were always involved in multiple sports and we modeled that behavior for our kids, who got involved in organized sports and enjoy being active now. So modeling works, as well as positive encouragement. It's not as easy as it looks. It is a struggle.
Paula Newton is not only one of the best Canadian-born journalists. She is also a role model for making regular exercise a priority as she juggles a career that has taken her around the world. The fact that she loves working out is a bonus!
