The Reach Out: Mike Florio
The creator of ProFootballTalk.com, co-host of PFT Live, and contributor to NBC's Sunday Night Football prioritizes regular exercise. Does he enjoy it?😀
Mike Florio created ProFootballTalk.com, the popular NFL-focused website that posts 30 to 50 ‘News and Rumors’ stories every day, covering league-wide issues around games, players, coaches, owners, general managers, deals, trades, and training camps.
Along with Chris Simms, Florio co-hosts PFT Live on Peacock, an opinionated weekday show that features NFL insights from Mike Golic and a wide array of league experts and commentators.
Florio is the author of Playmakers: How the NFL Really Works (and Doesn’t), and a regular contributor to NBC’s Sunday night Football Night in America. Florio also appears on NBC’s Sunday Night Football postgame show, where he and Mike Tirico break down the NFL’s biggest stories.
I reached out to Mike Florio to find out what motivates him to stay active and fit.
How do you make being active part of your life?
It's a huge part of my daily routine. I do some light work with weights and then ride 27 miles on a gym-quality bike. The goal is to get the 27 miles finished in an hour, although some days, it takes a few minutes longer than that.
During the intense months and weeks leading up to the recent NFL draft, was it more difficult to find time to get your workout in?Â
It was not, because I have made it part of my daily routine, and I protect that hour at all costs.
Did your exercise routines change during the pandemic?
If anything, I became more focused. Traveling a lot less often allowed me to get my workouts in nearly every day. At one point, I had a streak of more than 200 days in which I got my exercise in.Â
Are you a morning exerciser or do you work out whenever you can find the time?
I would prefer to get it out of the way in the morning, but it has evolved to something that I do between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. I enjoy dinner more if I get my workout in before we eat, even though I probably end up eating more.
What motivates you to exercise regularly?
It's always been important to me, from keeping my weight at an ideal range, to cardiovascular health, to getting a break from the grind of the workday. In recent years, I've gotten into a nice groove. I used to run a lot, but now my knees swell immediately if I run more than a mile. I can ride a bike all day, every day, with no problems.
When exercising, do you watch or listen to sports (NFL or otherwise)?
I actually play the Madden game and watch TV on my phone, whether it's the news or a show. The combined distractions help me get through the hour without constantly checking how much time is remaining — which I still do, at least twice per minute.
Do you wear an Apple watch or FitBit that reminds you to move more?
I used to wear one, but realized it wasn't really making a difference for me. I never looked back at what I did, so what was the point in tracking it?
Is there a sport or fitness activity that you think you might like to try?
I haven't gone fishing in years. I've promised myself that I’ll get out and do it more this spring and summer. As long as I bring someone along to take the damn things off the hook.
How do you think we can encourage kids and teens to be more active?
The easiest way to get kids and teens to be more active is probably to tell them not to be more active, right? Playing Madden while riding the bike is a great way to be active. It would be great to encourage them to find a way to be active while playing whatever game it is they play, or while messing with their phones. Riding an exercise bike is the easiest way to do that.
Thank you, @ProFootballTalk
Mike Florio displayed the same unique sense of humor when discussing his exercise routine that he does while co-hosting PFT Live.😀 I appreciated learning about his practical and honest approach to working out regularly.
