The Reach Out: Mark Cuban
How does the Dallas Mavs' owner keep in shape? Walking and talking, Dance Jam, and a lot of basketball.
Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, popular investor on ABC’s Shark Tank, and personable late night guest, spends hours replying to emails — "email is where I do most of my business,” he says — but does he make time to work out regularly?
I reached out to Mark Cuban to learn how he keeps active and fit while juggling a busy career.
Do you make a concerted effort to counteract all these hours of sitting?
I try to walk when I can, even while returning emails.
If I have a call, I will try to do it while I’m walking outside or on a treadmill.
Do you have a specific exercise routine?
Yes — treadmill, Peloton, elliptical, Rise Nation VersaClimber, walking, and playing and shooting basketball a lot.
Have your workout habits changed since COVID began?
Prior to COVID, I did a Dance Jam class on Saturday mornings and plan to get back there again.
I spend more time outside shooting baskets – something I can do by myself, get some exercise, and work on my jumper!
Do you wake up really early to fit a workout into your day?
I exercise when I can, usually at night, after dinner, and after spending time with my family.
What motivates you to keep active?
To be healthy so I can run around with my kids for a long time!
Who motivates you to keep fit?
Myself.
And when you can’t find time to work out?
I feel guilty.
Does your productivity and attention span improve when you’re more active?
It’s hard to tell because exercise is a daily part of my life.
I do yoga for stress relief, along with shooting baskets.
What would we find you watching on TV during your workouts?
Netflix or NBA games. A recent favorite was ‘Clickbait’ on Netflix.
When you’re working out, do you ever turn off your phone completely – no email, no texts, no social media?
All the time.
So when you’re not working out or returning emails, do you read for pleasure?
A.I. 2041: 10 Visions for our Future
(Note: This is a fitting choice, as Cuban’s “A.I. Bootcamp Initiative” for underserved high school students is now in its third year)
At the end of our interview, Mr. Cuban learned that I was a Utah Jazz fan in the early 90’s (before the Toronto Raptors arrived).
Mark Cuban was my very first interview for The Reach Out. Was I surprised that he replied? Of course! Being active and keeping fit is definitely important to him, but his family comes before his workouts (he will shoot many, many baskets later).
Thank you, @mcuban
