The Reach Out: Lisa Bloom
The high profile attorney says, "You'll find me nearly every morning out on my local hiking trails, trail running with my dogs, or mountain biking."
Lisa Bloom is a prominent attorney who specializes in fighting for victims of discrimination, harassment and abuse.
Bloom founded and owns the Bloom Firm, one of the country's largest victims' rights firms. She recently won settlement awards for all eight of her clients who were victims of Jeffrey Epstein. She recovers millions of dollars for everyday people seeking justice against their abusers every year.
Bloom hosted her own show on CourtTV for eight years, and is the author of three books, Think, Swagger, and Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It.
I reached out to Lisa Bloom to ask why exercise and fitness is a priority in her life.
How do you make physical activity a part of your day?
I have to go outside and play! I don't like smelly, confining gyms, bikes and treadmills that go nowhere. No thank you. You’ll find me nearly every morning out on my local hiking trails, trail running with my dogs, or mountain biking.
My dream is to backpack the entire Pacific Crest Trail, through all of California, Oregon and Washington, all 2650 miles. So far I've done 270 miles — it's how I spent the holidays this year. I told everyone that they could keep the cheap plastic gifts: all I wanted for Christmas was a dirt trail and fresh air! I’m going back out next week!
Do you have a specific routine or do you fit in exercise whenever you can find time?
Yes, I exercise in the mornings, usually quite early, 6 or 7am. I often listen to audio books -- I got through dozens this year -- or happy music.
Did your exercise habits change at all during the pandemic?
Thank goodness outside was the safe COVID place. I’ve always been outdoorsy, but the pandemic prompted my hubby to get out there and hike and camp with me. So that was a small blessing. In the summer, I often swim (again, outdoors) or paddle board at a nearby lake.
Do you wear a fitness monitor to remind you to move and walk?
Yes, I have a treadmill desk! I use it to break up long afternoons of sitting. An hour goes by and I don't even notice it. And since I mostly work remotely no one knows I'm wearing sneakers.
Do you watch the news, or listen to podcasts or music, while working out?
I don't watch anything because I already have too many screens in my day. I listen. When I'm backpacking a long multi-day trail, I often don't even use the earbuds, and instead just breathe and listen to the wind sighing in the pines, or the water lapping at the lake, or the caws of crows. Other times I listen to whatever music I feel like because that's my wonderful special time.
What motivates you to keep so active?
Life is short. I am 60. I love being in good health, and not taking any pharmaceuticals. I know my continued good health depends on eating well (I'm vegan) and moving.
I get antsy if I have to sit still. I'm like a four year old. So I don't need any extra motivation.
How do you think we can encourage young people to be more active?
I am taking a friend's teenage daughter hiking this weekend. If we get kids outside, they usually love it. We are meant to romp and roam and get dirty. All kids need is a little nudge.
Lisa Bloom proves that you don’t need a gym to get a great workout. Exercising outdoors (hiking, walking, cycling, paddle board) is a fantastic alternative.
