The Reach Out: Dan Shulman
With his heavy travel schedule, the ESPN commentator makes good use of the hotel bike, elliptical, and treadmill.
Dan Shulman is the play-by-play announcer for the Toronto Blue Jays on SportsNet and the lead announcer for ESPN's men's college basketball. He also calls select regular season Major League Baseball games for ESPN and post-season MLB coverage on ESPN Radio.
Shulman’s work has received many accolades and honors, including NSSA National Sportscaster of the Year and Sports Media Canada Broadcaster of the Year.
When I reached out to Dan Shulman, I knew that his travel schedule would factor into his workout routine, but is it the key factor?
How do you keep active while on the road?
I travel a lot. Like a lot. So it is imperative that I exercise when on the road. I will go to the hotel gym, at least every second day I am on the road, and do something, whether it's the bike, elliptical or even some incline walking on the treadmill. And certain cities are great for walking around (e.g., NY, Boston), so I'll get out and do that quite a bit.
When you’re not traveling, do you have an exercise routine?
At home, we have a Peloton, and a dog who loves her walks, and I still play basketball when I can with some buddies of mine. So it's kind of a mix and match type of thing. I do whatever my environment allows me to do.
How has COVID changed your workout habits?
When COVID began, my work shut down for four months, so I had way more time than I normally do. For those four months, I was on the Peloton almost every day and the dog got 2-3 long walks every day. But now I'm kind of back into my pre-COVID exercise routine again.
You obviously spend a lot of time sitting while calling all those games.
I’m not able to break up the time when I am broadcasting, other than standing up and stretching my legs. With basketball, I can walk around at halftime for a bit.
What is your motivation for keeping active and in shape?
In terms of staying motivated, my friends — the ones I play basketball with — they contribute to that. We're all in our early 50's, but we push each other.
Are you drawn toward sports-related books and podcasts?
A good percentage of my reading and podcast listening is sports-related. I'm kind of a one trick pony in that regard. Sport takes up a big part of my life.
I admire Dan Shulman’s commitment to exercising regularly despite his demanding travel schedule. One upside? He can recommend which hotels have the best gyms!
