Chris Evert, the decorated tennis icon, won 18 Grand Slam singles championships and three doubles titles over the course of her career.
Evert reached 34 Grand Slam singles finals, more than any other player in the history of professional tennis, and holds the record of most consecutive years (13) of winning at least one Major title.
As co-owner of the Evert Tennis Academy in Florida, Evert provides coaching and mentoring for student-athletes.
She is an ESPN tennis commentator for Grand Slam tournaments, publisher of Tennis magazine, and the USTA Foundation Chairperson.
In 2015, she launched a line of tennis and active apparel called Chrissie by Tail.
I reached out to Chris Evert, eager to find out how the first sole recipient of Sports Illustrated’s "Sportswoman of the Year" award keeps active and fit.
I imagine that exercise and fitness is an important part of your life.
I am lucky in owning a tennis Academy where I hit with the kids four times a week, which is great cardio.
I also love rock climbing. When I’m in Colorado in the summer, I rock climb with my middle son, Nicky, a great all body strengthening. Rock climbing studios are all over the place, with different levels for everyone, and it’s the best strength workout!
Have your exercise habits changed since the pandemic began?
My lifesaver during COVID was my Peloton. Ally Love was my instructor and the app also has yoga and stretching, which I do periodically, especially when feeling stiff and tight.
It sounds like a lot, but I space everything out and mix it up so I don’t get bored!!
Do you have a specific exercise routine?
I do the Peloton either in the morning before I start my day, or late afternoon before dinner.
Have you recently tried any trendy fitness classes or programs that you’ve enjoyed?
My son, Alex, has gotten me into CrossFit which really strengthens my body, which at my age, I need!
The kids who play tennis at the Evert Tennis Academy are already motivated to exercise. How can we encourage all kids to be more active?
Parents need to be creative — rock climbing, gymnastics, playgrounds, swimming, hip hop, plus sport, but make it fun!
Along with many other tennis fans, I closely followed Chris Evert’s amazing playing career. I admire her dedication to coaching and mentoring young tennis players, and I’m not surprised that she is so passionate about keeping active and fit.
Thank you, @ChrissieEvert
