Barbara McQuade is a legal analyst for NBC and MSNBC, a professor from practice at the University of Michigan Law School, and a former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
McQuade also co-hosts the #SistersInLaw podcast with her fellow “legal masterminds,” Joyce Vance, Kimberly Atkins-Stohr, and Jill Wine-Banks.
I was eager to ask Barbara McQuade how she keeps active while juggling such a full career.
How do you make exercise and fitness a part of your life?
I try to combine exercise with social interaction. I swim with my husband, play golf with my adult children, and play tennis with friends.
I run alone because I have yet to find someone who wants to run as slowly as I do. I prefer to run outdoors, but run on a treadmill when it gets too cold or too dark.
Do you have a specific exercise routine?
Ideally, I exercise early in the morning to avoid the inevitable conflicts that can arise during the day.
If I am exercising with others, then we need to coordinate the time.
Has the pandemic changed anything about your activity habits?
During the pandemic, I have been sitting at a computer more than ever. I’ve been using a laundry drying rack to elevate my computer so that I can stand while Zooming.
Is there something that motivates you to keep active and exercise regularly?
Staying healthy and fit to keep up with my husband and kids motivates me.
Do you watch TV or listen to music or a podcast while you exercise?
Indoors, I watch sports or news on television. Outdoors, I listen to podcasts.
Is there a sport, activity, or fitness trend that you would like to try one day?
I’ve always thought I would like to run a marathon if I had time to commit to the training, but that is not a challenge one should take on lightly.
We know that many children and teens are not as active as they should be. How do you think we can encourage young people to exercise more?
I know that many kids are overscheduled, but a regular schedule that includes exercise is the best way to make sure it is a priority.
We encouraged our kids to be involved in some sort of sports league at all times.
I don’t believe Barbara McQuade runs as slowly as she thinks she does, but I agree with her that it’s very easy to overlook proper computer posture. I also suggest listening to #SistersInLaw while you work out.😀
